Friends of Mexico Members Return to Enjoy Mazatlán’s Winter Season

The Friends of Mexico organization held its first monthly meeting of the season upon returning to Mazatlán, reaffirming its mission to support vulnerable communities and stay connected to the city’s cultural and musical events.

“Don’t forget — we are the friends of Mexico and Mazatlán,” said members of the group as they reunited to kick off the winter season.

Linda Hannawalt, president of Friends of Mexico, welcomed attendees and thanked the community of foreign residents for their ongoing commitment. Vice President Lissy Bernal noted that while the organization saw a drop in membership during the pandemic and lost several founding members, it remains strong and active.

“Our season sometimes starts in October or November and runs through April or May,” Bernal said. “We’re stronger than ever now, and the return of foreign residents is a great indicator for the city — not just economically, but culturally. Many of them volunteer, share knowledge, and sponsor local children.”

Erling Palmer Biggness, who leads the group’s School Breakfast Program for more than 40 children, reaffirmed his dedication to continuing the initiative, noting that many students attend class without having eaten.

Through their ongoing volunteer work and the Friends of Mexico Foundation, the group currently supports a local school and aims to expand assistance to more institutions in need.

Mazatlán’s winter season, enriched by the arrival of its long-time foreign friends, once again blends community, culture, and compassion. ❤️🌴
