Sheinbaum Considering December Trip to the U.S. for World Cup Draw

With 196 days remaining before the World Cup inauguration at Estadio Azteca, the governments of Mexico City, Jalisco, and Nuevo León presented the full list of activities and infrastructure projects planned for the host cities—airport upgrades, new roadways, improved public transportation, and new public spaces.

In this context, President Claudia Sheinbaum is considering traveling to Washington on December 5 to attend the official World Cup draw. Her decision will depend primarily on whether U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will also attend. If confirmed, it would be Sheinbaum’s first in-person meeting with Trump.

When asked whether a bilateral meeting with Trump could take place during her visit, Sheinbaum stated that the trip was still undecided. If she goes, her main objective would be attending the draw, though any potential meeting with the White House would depend on schedules and coordination with the host country.

Regarding infrastructure for the tournament, Sheinbaum announced that the federal government will allocate between 1.5 and 2 billion pesos to support the three host cities, primarily for transportation upgrades, especially the Metro system.

  • In Mexico City, the funds will go toward remodeling Line 2.

  • In Guadalajara, toward Line 5.

  • In Monterrey, toward Lines 4 and 6.

During the morning press conference, Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada detailed events and improvements planned for the capital: museum exhibitions themed around the World Cup, fan festivals, neighborhood upgrades around Estadio Azteca, strengthened transportation via electromobility, renovation of 10 tourist routes, upgrades to Xochimilco’s docks, work on 334 km of safe pathways, installation of 185,000 new streetlights, and deployment of over 3,500 patrol units for public safety.

She also highlighted renovations at both the Mexico City International Airport and the Felipe Ángeles International Airport, noting that the capital handles 1,200 flights per day.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus said the state aims to be the “most Mexican host city” for the World Cup, planning free concerts—including performances by Maná and Alejandro Fernández—as well as major renovations to Guadalajara’s Historic Center, where the largest fan fest in the state will be held. Jalisco expects 2.5 to 3 million visitors, and is preparing by modernizing the Guadalajara airport, improving access roads, advancing construction on Metro Line 5, and expanding electromobility in the city.

Nuevo León Governor Samuel García reported that his administration has completed 34 World Cup–related projects, emphasizing that they are not superficial expenses, but long-term infrastructure investments. Among them is the expansion of Fundidora Park, adding 20 new hectares. Now that the state’s water shortage has been resolved, more parks will be developed.

Additionally, construction is underway on Metro Lines 4 and 6—one of which will provide a direct connection between the Monterrey airport and the Metro system. The state is also progressing with the renovation of more than 4,000 metropolitan buses.
