José Luis Urquidy Returns Home to Play with Venados de Mazatlán

The Teodoro Mariscal Stadium will once again roar with the presence of one of its hometown heroes. José Luis Urquidy, Mazatlán-born pitcher and Major League Baseball player—formerly with the Houston Astros and now with the Detroit Tigers—returns home to wear the Venados de Mazatlán jersey, the team where his baseball journey began.

Urquidy’s return not only strengthens the team’s pitching lineup but also reignites the excitement of fans who have followed his remarkable professional career. His dedication, humility, and love for Mazatlán have made him an inspiration for young athletes across Sinaloa.

The Mazatlán native, who trained in the Quintero Castañeda Little League, last pitched at Teodoro Mariscal during the 2018–2019 season, posting a 2–3 record over six games and 26 innings.

He made his MLB debut in 2019 and quickly earned a spot in the rotation thanks to his control and composure under pressure. That same year, he became the third Mexican pitcher to start a World Series game, later playing a key role in the Astros’ 2022 championship with standout postseason performances.

With a solid record and reputation as a clutch performer, Urquidy embodies Mazatlán’s talent, discipline, and pride on the mound. His return to Teodoro Mariscal is more than just a homecoming—it’s a celebration of roots, perseverance, and the enduring bond between a player and his city.

Urquidy will wear number 65, starting Thursday, November 6.
