Five people were brought safely back to shore after being caught in strong waves during two rescue operations carried out Sunday by the Aquatic Rescue Squad of Mazatlán’s Public Security Department.
Gustavo Espinoza Bastidas, head of the lifeguard team, reported that the first incident occurred in the Gaviotas 1 area, where four visitors from Durango were pulled out by rip currents and were unable to return to shore on their own. Lifeguards immediately entered the water and brought them to safety. After basic medical evaluation, all four were found to be suffering only from fatigue and nervousness.
A couple of hours later, a second call for help was received. Lifeguards rescued another man, originally from California, who had also been dragged out by the current. He was evaluated on-site and did not require transport.
Espinoza Bastidas urged residents and visitors to follow lifeguard instructions, respect beach warning flags, and avoid entering the ocean in areas marked as unsafe.
