Mexico Stays Alive in the U-17 World Cup After Narrow Win Over Ivory Coast

Mexico is one step closer to the quarterfinals. Any victory in their final group-stage match at the U-17 World Cup in Doha will secure their place, regardless of what happens between South Korea and Ivory Coast.

Under coach Carlos Cariño, the Mexican squad defeated Ivory Coast 1–0, climbing to third place in their group behind leaders South Korea and Switzerland — their next opponent on Monday.

It was a tense match filled with referee complaints, yellow cards, and VAR checks. Despite limited chances, Mexico capitalized on their most important opportunity when Ian Olvera, a defender from Club Tijuana, scored with a powerful header from a free kick in the 74th minute.

Ivory Coast dominated for much of the match, showing superior physical strength, but failed to finish their plays. Mexican goalkeeper Santiago López stood out with key saves in a difficult first half, and after the goal, Mexico focused on defense, holding off the African team with long clearances and disciplined play.

After losing 2–1 to South Korea in their opener, Mexico’s win keeps their hopes alive. With three points and in third place, victory over Switzerland will send them to the knockout stage — while a draw could leave the door open for South Korea.
