Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, presented the 2025 National Sports Award this Friday to standout athletes including cyclist Isaac del Toro, diver Osmar Olvera, and archer Andrea Becerra, among others. She encouraged them to remember “how great our country is every time you compete. Some wanted to diminish us, but we are a great nation with an enormous history.”
During the ceremony, held at the National Palace in Mexico City—where the 50th anniversary of the award was also celebrated—the president congratulated the 16 honorees and thanked them for placing Mexico at the forefront of international sport.
“I want to say to everyone who participates in these competitions that you are a source of pride for Mexico. When we see you compete, when you win a medal, or simply give your full effort, it brings enormous joy to the Mexican people.
“Every time you represent Mexico, feel the same pride we feel when we see you compete. We admire your discipline and dedication, and the example you set for children and young people. Thank you for elevating the name of our country,” Sheinbaum said in a brief address.
Among those honored was Rarámuri ultramarathon runner Lorena Ramírez, who received recognition for Outstanding Career in Mexican Sport and delivered a speech in her Indigenous language—one that was not translated during the ceremony or its live broadcast.
After the event, cyclist Isaac del Toro said he was “very happy for this award. I know I am privileged for the opportunities that have come my way, and I am very grateful for everything that has been done for the sport.”
