At the 2025 Book Fair and Sinaloan Authors held at the Autonomous University of the West (UAdeO) in Mazatlán, local writers shared with students how the sea has shaped their work and encouraged them to develop a love for reading.
As part of the fair’s theme “Letters Born from the Sea,” the panel “Writing from the Sea: Identity and Territory in Mazatlecan Literature” brought together authors Leonor Ramírez, Saúl Valdez, Julio Zataráin, and Fernando Alarriba, who spoke to students at the university’s Aula Magna about their beginnings in literature.
The writers reflected on how the presence of the sea has deeply influenced their literary creations — an ever-present element in the life and identity of anyone who calls Mazatlán home.
They shared that once immersed in the world of literature, it becomes impossible to stop writing, no matter what paths their personal lives may take. The authors also encouraged young people to nurture a passion for reading and self-expression.
The session was moderated by poet Silvia Michel Acosta, a professor at UAdeO Mazatlán and organizer of the event.
