‘Mazatlán I Want You Clean’ Program Reaches Parque Lomas del Ébano as City Plans to Restore the Area

Cleanup crews from Jumapam and Public Works carried out cleaning tasks at the park located on Ofelia Guevara Street, which had been completely abandoned after the pandemic.

The “Mazatlán I Want You Clean” program held its fourteenth cleanup day this week, arriving at the Lomas del Ébano neighborhood.

Personnel from Jumapam and the Mazatlán Public Works Department cleaned the park on Ofelia Guevara Street, where the city hopes to restore a space that today remains neglected. Led by Mayor Estrella Palacios Domínguez and several municipal officials, the cleanup aimed to remove as much trash and debris as possible to bring new life to public spaces. The activity also took place simultaneously in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood, Playa Cerritos, and Insurgentes Avenue.

“Today we have four cleanup crews working in different parts of the city. I want to share with you that so far we’ve collected 45 cubic meters of waste — that’s seven dump truck loads, totaling 1,350 bags we’ve gathered through this program. I want to thank everyone for getting to work,” said Mayor Palacios Domínguez.

“In addition to cleanups and collecting trash on our beaches, urban areas, and drainage channels, we also take the opportunity to carry out junk removal efforts, which we will also do today, along with fumigation.”

In response to requests from local residents, the Mayor noted that beyond the cleanup event, the city will evaluate ways to rehabilitate the park so the community can benefit from it, as the area already includes an outdoor gym, sports courts, and large open spaces for various activities.

“Today, as we bring the program here to Lomas del Ébano, we are also working on what is called the restoration of public spaces, and these efforts are part of that. We will clean up and also analyze everything that can be done here, because at the top of the park there are sports courts that can be used by everyone in the surrounding area.”

“What we want is for these spaces — which belong to the people of Mazatlán — to come alive again and be used. They must serve the community, which is most important. This place already has outdoor exercise equipment, this roofed area, and everything needed for residents to take advantage of it.”

Some residents of Lomas del Ébano shared that before the pandemic, the space was used as a Community Wellness Center, where meals were served, sporting events were held, and activities such as Zumba classes and environmental education talks were offered.
