Guanajuato Receives the 2025 National Health Quality Award

The Ministry of Health of the State of Guanajuato has been honored with the National Health Quality Award and the 2025 Merit Recognition for Continuous Improvement.

In Mexico City, Health Secretary Gabriel Cortés Alcalá accepted three distinctions on behalf of all the families of the Guanajuato State Public Health Institute. The General Directorate of Quality and Health Education (DGCES) of the Federal Ministry of Health oversees the National Health Quality Award and the Merit Recognition for Continuous Improvement as part of its key programs.

Secretary Cortés Alcalá explained that three medical units in Guanajuato received recognitions after demonstrating the highest level of maturity in implementing the Health Quality Management Model (MGCS).

This model outlines guidelines for implementing a people-centered quality management system that delivers valuable results for users.

The recognized units include:

  • Primary Health Care Unit of Santiago de Cuenda, part of Health Jurisdiction 3 in Celaya, in the primary care category.

  • State Public Health Laboratory, in the diagnostic auxiliaries category.

  • Accreditation Directorate, in the administrative offices category.

The ceremony, held in Mexico City, was attended by Dr. Laura Cortés Sanabria, head of the General Directorate of Quality and Health Education.

Guanajuato has earned 12 recognitions across different categories from 2020 to date, positioning the state as a national leader in this area. For 2025, the state once again matches last year’s achievement by receiving three federal recognitions — a historic milestone.

With these results, Guanajuato is the state with the highest number of recognitions obtained between 2020 and 2025, especially in primary care and administrative categories, achieving 12 total awards. In comparison, health ministries from all other states combined have earned only five recognitions in the same period.

Cortés Alcalá added that each award reaffirms the daily efforts of health units to provide friendlier, safer, and higher-quality care. For patients, this translates into faster services, reliable diagnoses, simplified processes, and a human-centered experience during every visit.
