Inauguration of the Mural “Our Voices from Mictlán”

Created by young artists and the Sirenas Negras collective, the mural at the Jardín cemetery celebrates Mexico’s Day of the Dead traditions and the vibrant expression of urban art.

In an atmosphere filled with color, symbolism, and youthful talent, the Municipal Youth Institute (IMJU) unveiled the mural “Our Voices from Mictlán” at Mazatlán’s Municipal Cemetery No. 4. The collective work pays tribute to Mexico’s deep cultural roots and the memory of departed loved ones.

The mural was the result of a three-week workshop organized by IMJU in collaboration with the Sirenas Negras art collective. During this time, young participants explored the intersection between visual arts and Day of the Dead traditions, creating a piece rich in identity, respect, and urban expression.

Arantxa Fernanda Ahumada Rosas, Director of the Municipal Youth Institute, highlighted the participation of students from the Autonomous University of Durango in the creation of the mural, noting that art serves as a tool for unity, remembrance, and cultural pride.

“Our young people reflect a generation that honors its traditions through art — this mural is proof of their commitment to Mazatlán,” she said.

Ahumada Rosas emphasized that this project aligns with the vision of Mayor Estrella Palacios Domínguez, who has encouraged initiatives to beautify public spaces and inspire young Mazatlecos to cherish Mexican traditions, using creativity and community involvement to positively transform their surroundings.

With “Our Voices from Mictlán,” Mazatlán adds a new space where art, history, and youth converge, reaffirming its commitment to honoring the past, celebrating life, and promoting art as a powerful expression of collective identity.
