For the ones not in the know, here is a short intro for the game!
Mexican Lottery is more than just a game of chance: it is a cultural symbol that has accompanied entire generations during family gatherings, town festivals, and community celebrations. With its colorful illustrated cards and the characteristic chant of the announcer, this game keeps alive a tradition that blends fun, suspense, and a touch of nostalgia.
Originating in the 18th century and popularized in Mexico in the 19th century, Lotería became an essential part of everyday life. Its characters —the mermaid, the gentleman, the moon, the drunkard, among many others— represent snapshots of Mexican life and culture, transmitting values, symbols, and even playful humor.
How it’s played:
Each participant receives a board with 16 different images. The “caller” draws cards from the deck one by one and announces them with witty phrases or rhymes that bring each figure to life. The first player to complete their board and shout “Lotería!” becomes the winner.
